These 5 tracks: That’ll destroy your headphones (Dubstep)

Something new I’m going to do every Monday (yes I know it’s Tuesday, shush!). A selection of tracks under a specific genre or feeling or whatever. (*psst* sign up for the long mix at the bottom of the post!)

This week’s theme was inspired by a friend at the local Crossfit box asking me to recommend some dubstep tracks that would literally destroy his headphones. Clearly, it was a “max effort” day, so he wanted to go in HARD!

In at No. 5: Borgore – Glory Hole (Vocal Mix) **Explicit** Buy at Juno Download (Mp3/WAV)

Whatever you’re raising your eyebrow to over the title, that’s what is in here. Especially as it’s the vocal mix of this track. Explicit lyrics and subject aside *ahem*, Borgore goes in with his usual hardness that will give any decent set of headphones a run for their mid-range money when the track drops. During the verses you get a taste of something my cousin would be into when I visit Atlanta….I almost want to shout “Luda!”, oh dear…Sub-bass with 808 snares and trickling hi-hats typical of Southern rap.

In at No. 4: Flux Pavillion – Voscillate (Roksonix Remix) Buy at Juno Download (Mp3/WAV)

A laidback beginning, tipping its hat rather demurely towards the Reggae roots that you find the Dub, in Dubstep, came from (pre-skrillex…think Tempa Allstars). The lyrics are sung and compliment both the laidback theme as well as the Flux Pavilion drops that have been refined to almost a staple requirement. Again, it’ll certainly give your headphone’s mid-range a workout whilst subtly licking some sub-bass that make your ears go a little fuzzy…

In at No. 3: Roksonix/Statelapse/FuntCase – Let’s Go Buy at Juno Download (Mp3/WAV)

Vocals here are taking on another Reggae Dub aspect that is typically adopted by Dubstep. Jamacian influenced lyrics with heavy usage of ping-pong echoes. Add to that a darker, sub-bass heavy track and you’ll probably be pulling a mean face whilst you’re breaking the horizontal plane in your 1 rep max front squat. The first track that’s really making its headway in the lower region of bass that’ll make your ears go fuzzy! Don’t mess about!

In at No. 2: FuntCase – Gorilla Flex Buy at Juno Download (Mp3/WAV)

Okay!!! So, this one was going to go for the number one spot, but…it’s just so face-meltingly-ridiculous I had to look for something else to set these two apart. Aside from this living up to its name “Gorilla Flex”, it’s designed for one thing only…aural assault! It also sounds like it’s saying “Egg-nog” a lot. Still, the squelching highs, automatic-firing mid-range and sniper-esque bass makes for a track that gets sh** done!! …Heavy!

Taking the No. 1 Spot: Noisia – Tommy’s Theme Buy at Juno Download (Mp3/WAV)

Awe-inspiringly beautiful. Without turning into some over gushing hopeless romantic, the first time I heard this on TC’s “Dont Play” podcast (005), I actually stopped in my tracks. Thankfully I was waiting for a train anyway. For sure, this is a grower and not a shower; the undeniable crispness of the mid-range, sultry and damn right sultry drones of sawtooth bass and it’s ever lingering sub-bass cousins makes the lead up to the drop well worth it. The cinematic qualities of this track – quite frankly – makes me want to go make a video about some Parkour-running, Capoeira-fighting ninja with an epic storyline that requires a fight sequence fueled by this ridiculousness right here. That alone, makes it worthy of being this week’s number one dubstep track that’ll destroy your headphones.

If you want any of these, The above player links to a store that’s got an epic soft spot in my heart (Juno Records: Junodownload) mainly due to them just being ridiculously awesome when I’ve messed up with my vinyl orders and such. The links are affiliated, just so you know, only because I trust them implicitly so far as having every track out there (as well as a back catalog!) and I’m not a fan of illegal downloads.

Just one more thing.

If you loved these tracks as much as I’ve done sharing them with you and you’d be interested in getting a DJ long-mix of them all put together, I’ve setup a weekly e-mail update where by you’ll get the mix on the Friday BEFORE the “These 5″ post comes out on the Monday.
